Niantic has announced it is teaming up with Qualcomm to create its augmented reality headset for the metaverse. The device, not yet named, will harness the power of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors with compatibility with Snapdragon Spaces.

Niantic, the creators of famous AR products such as Pokemon Go, will make its premier Lightship visual positioning system compatible with Spaces in 2023. Thus enabling developers to use Lightship VPS across various devices and applications, increasing functionality.

A combination of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors and Lightship VPS will allow Niantic to set up its game in terms of developing AR applications, including hardware, in the form of an augmented reality headset, which was revealed at the Snapdragon summit yesterday.

This new device will usher in a new era of AR headsets, which are widely believed by many to be the technology that most will adopt when interacting with the wider metaverse, with a lesser emphasis on virtual reality.

Nevertheless, this new announcement is sure to strike fear into the hearts of competitors such as Meta and Nreal who have already started to release products that use AR. Similarly, with announcements on the horizon from the likes of Apple and other tech giants looking to develop groundbreaking immersive hardware, Niantic will have tough competition, despite its expertise in AR technology.
