What will usher in the social Metaverse? Multiplayer Oculus Quest 2 games due to their broad appeal and enabling technologies. By definition, the markers that enable a social Metaverse will come in part or entirely from the improvements in virtual reality multiplayer gaming.
Yet, on Steam, it is a grueling chore to find multiplayer Meta Quest 2 games matching one’s unique preferences and do’s, and don’ts. Thus, Metaverse Insider is here for you and has put together 19 of the best Meta (nee Oculus) Quest 2 multiplayer games in one master list divided into genres, so you can instantly find the VR game for you. There is even a short review for each game, helping you figure out if the game in question of the genre you enjoy is up to par. Enjoy!
What Are Multiplayer Oculus Quest 2 Games?
Like its traditional gaming counterpart, multiplayer Oculus Quest 2 games are VR video games experienced together in co-op or against other human players in PvP, played om Oculus Quest 2 headset. Multiplayer emerged as a popular gaming category due to the limited replayability and intelligence exhibited by video game AI opponents compared to qualia-thinking humans.
Multiplayer games come in two forms: local and online.
Local oculus quest 2 multiplayer games
Also known as couch co-op or party games, local multiplayer games can only be experienced between friends or family in the same room. Practically, this means multiple players wearing a standalone oculus quest 2 headset together (or one by one taking turns) or one in a headset with the other players on their smartphones interacting with the same game world.
Great examples of local VR multiplayer games are Demeo, and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!
Online meta quest 2 multiplayer games
As the name implies, online VR multiplayer games are experienced over the cloud, which means players can be wherever they want with a solid internet connection. Interestingly, due to this decentralized aspect of online VR multiplayer games, the gameplay itself is shaped accordingly, whereas local VR multiplayer games have a distinct ‘party feel’.
Great examples of online VR multiplayer games are Hyper Dash, Pavlov, and Zenith: The Last City.

The best multiplayer oculus games below will be segmented into genres, so you can find the best games for you.

POPULATION: One
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
BigBox VR | BigBox VR | Steam, and Oculus | 22 Oct, 2020 |
Game Description
The battle royale subgenre within shooters has a rich history going back to 2012 when the third-person shooter Arma 2 got a popular zombie-survival mod called DayZ.
Since then, battle royale as a subgenre has been morphed through many games. For example, Fortnite was in development as a base defense game but turned into a battle royale and has since become a cultural icon. Sure enough, VR multiplayer gaming got its defining battle royale VR game: POPULATION: One.
Requirements
POPULATION: One is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is POPULATION: One
On Steam, POPULATION: One has a “Very Positive” review score of 85% from 2,150 reviews, with the most recent being “Mostly Positive” at 72%.
Requirements
POPULATION: One is moderately accessible as a PC VR game, requiring a gaming computer.
Our Take on POPULATION: One
Hands down, the best battle royale (possibly shooter) is POPULATION: One. While its player base is dying an impatient death with ever-arduous wait times in the lobby with raging kids. Population’s shooting mechanics, gun feel, and weapon selection are on point, capturing nicely the constant anxiousness indicative of the battle royal subgenre. Namely, the climbing mobility of the game brings delightfully intense moments and strategic depth to the multiplayer VR matches.

Hyper Dash
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Triangle Factory | Triangle Factory | Steam, Oculus, Viveport | Feb 25, 2021 |
Game Description
Continuing with game history, Hyper Dash follows the iconic Unreal Tournament classic and the subgenre of arena shooters. A style of shooter similar to battle royale but within smaller levels of tight corridors and SciFi mobility (think gravity jumping pads). Likewise, Hyper Dash also follows another gaming trend, free-to-play, liberally used for multiplayer games to breathe continued life into their player base.
Requirements
Hyper Dash is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Hyper Dash
On Steam, Hyper Dash has a “Very Positive” review score of 89% from 200 reviews.
Our Take on Hyper Dash
Being a 90s kid, I have a high bar with arena shooters in the style of Unreal Tournament, so when I deem Hyper Dash as a strong VR entry to the subgenre, it carries weight. While I love the classic game modes like Capture The Flag, Domination, Control Point, Deathmatch, and Payload, I would have liked to see Triangle Factory innovate and offer new game modes to the arena. Despite this, the movement mechanics of warping and energy management brings great depth to the VR multiplayer game.

Contractors
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Caveman Studio | Caveman Studio | Steam, Oculus, | Dec 14, 2018 |
Game Description
Contractors is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 and 2 in virtual reality. So a focus on realism without sacrificing pacing, larger levels than Counter-Strike’s closer corridors, and wide weapon customizability for tactical complexity.
Requirements
Contractors is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Contractors
On Steam, Contractors has a “Very Positive” review score of 85% from 2,950 reviews, with the most recent being “Very Positive” at 90%.
Our Take on Contractors
If you are more into ‘professional’ competitive shooters but still want a team-based feel, Contractors is your VR multiplayer shooter over Pavlov. What to particularly point out is the modding community is thriving for this game, turning it from a Team Fortress 2 arcade fun to a full-on Arma military simulator. Briefly, where Pavlov is more arcadey, Contractors is in the middle, and Onward is more realistic.
Like Pavlov, what Contractors is going for, CoD in VR, it succeeds.

VRChat
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
VRChat | VRChat | Steam, Oculus, Viveport | Feb 1, 2017 |
Game Description
VRChat is a social VR application meant to hang out with friends and family while waiting in lobbies for the other VR multiplayer games on this list. Its main attraction is the ability for players to make their own experiences ranging from short one-offs to more elaborate VR experiences.
Requirements
VRChat is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is VRChat
On Steam, VRChat has a “Very Positive” review score of 72% from 196,000 reviews, with the most recent being “Very Positive” at 82%.
Our Take on VRChat
The reason VRChat is on this list is its popularity. Yet, its popularity is a double-edged sword as often an uncomfortable atmosphere permeates the hang-outs due to no ‘age verification system’. Consequently, I recommend only using VRChat with friends and family. If you want to try out a solid social VR experience with strangers, ChilloutVR and NeosVR offer more relaxed social VR experiences. But for hanging out when in lobbies, VRChat is a-okay.

Rec Room
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Rec Room | Rec Room | Steam, Oculus, PlayStation | Jun 1, 2016 |
Game Description
The closest competitor to VRChat, besides the half-baked Horizon Worlds from Meta (nee Facebook), is RecRoom. Yet, where VRChat, as the name implies, is focused more on hanging out and social interaction, RecRoom zeroes in on mini-games created by the developers or its users.
Requirements
Rec Room is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Rec Room
On Steam, Rec Room has a “Very Positive” review score of 91% from 51,500 reviews, with the most recent being “Very Positive” at 88%.
Our Take on Rec Room
The biggest differentiator that makes me prefer VRChat over RecRoom for social VR is the daily active users are larger by a factor of ten in VRChat vs RecRoom. However, neither in my opinion, is great for VR interactions with strangers. And so, RecRoom’s focus on mini-games like dodgeball, mini golf, and the like makes it a superior offering to VRChat, despite both VRChat and RecRoom being free to play.

Bait!
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Resolution Games | Resolution Games | Oculus, Viveport | May 21, 2019 |
Game Description
Bait! is a free-to-play, casual fishing game with a short voice-acted campaign and a social VR hang-out mode.
Requirements
Bait! is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Bait!
On the Oculus store, Bait! Has 4/5 stars from 2,600 reviews.
Our Take on Bait!
What stood out was the diverse environments and stellar sound design accompanying them in Bait! So despite the mediocre graphics optimized for standalone VR like the Oculus Quest 2, you get a different vibe between a murky swamp complemented by banjo tunes versus a tropical beach with relaxing Hawaiian music. And while the game mechanics are minimalistic, it is perfect for meditative lonesome fishing trips and hanging out with friends.
For the low price of free-to-play, my friends and I prefer to do some fishing while waiting in lobbies.

Cards & Tankards
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Divergent Realities | Divergent Realities | Steam, Oculus | May 25, 2023 |
Game Description
Cards & Tankards is a free-to-play fantasy virtual card tabletop game set in a dimly lit medieval tavern playing against strangers or your friends.
Requirements
Cards & Tankards is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Cards & Tankards
On Steam, Cards & Tankards has a “Very Positive” review score of 93% from 550 reviews.
Our Take on Cards & Tankards
Cards & Tankards, once you get past the terrible tutorial, is a great entry to the card game genre as it doesn’t bombard you with an insurmountable amount of modifiers or game mechanics. You have the basic health/attack with some simple text modifiers. Cards are also either creatures or spells.
What sells Cards & Tankards’ free price tag is the tangible feeling spells have when you cast them at your opponents’ creatures looking like physical minis on the oak plank table.
Like Bait!, my friends and I prefer Cards & Tankards over VRChat or RecRoom for the best “in-between other games” VR multiplayer game.

Warplanes: WW1 Fighters
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Home Net Games | Home Net Games | Steam, Oculus, Viveport | Mar 4, 2021 |
Game Description
Warplanes: WW1 Fighters is a World War One flight and dogfighting simulator with two campaign storylines and multiplayer against other players.
How popular is Warplanes: WW1 Fighters
On Steam, Warplanes: WW1 Fighters has a “Very Positive” review score of 90% from 350 reviews.
Requirement
Warplanes: WW1 Fighters is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
Our Take on Warplanes: WW1 Fighters
Warplanes’ best feature is its versatility in gameplay modes. So while it doesn’t deliver the most immersive or complex flight simulation out there – check out Microsoft Flight Simulator or DCS World for that – Warplanes can be played however you want. What also added many more hours of replayability was when the devs implemented user-generated levels. So, if you want a flight sim where you can cruise comfortably through the skies and then hectically chase another player’s tail while you discharge rounds, Warplanes: WW1 Fighters is for you.

STRIDE
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Joy Way | Joy Way | Steam, Oculus, PlayStation, VIveport | Jun 10, 2022 |
Game Description
STRIDE is a parkour racing shooter reminiscing the style of Mirror’s Edge (although less polished).
Requirements
STRIDE is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is STRIDE
On Steam, STRIDE has a “Very Positive” review score of 84% from 1,900 reviews, with the most recent being “Mixed” at 63%.
Our Take on STRIDE
What hold STRIDE back a bit is the clunky hand gestures, button interactions, and unresponsive hand movements in a free running game where you run, jump, double jump, and shoot against other players. I particularly like the easy-to-pick-up but hard-to-master. When STRIDE works – which is most of the time – it shines and is well worth a tryout! I would give a higher score if bugs and crashes were fixed, as the core holds great potential.

Game Description
Zenith: The Last City is an MMORPG in virtual reality and is still in Early Access.
Requirements

How popular is Zenith: The Last City
On Steam, Zenith: The Last City has a “Very Positive” review score of 82% from 3,300 reviews, with the most recent being “Mixed” at 58%.
Our Take on Zenith: The Last City
What is interesting about Zenith is that if I were to write this paragraph a year ago, it would sound very different (possibly not even on the list). That is to say, Zenith has come a long way and is beginning to be an expansive and solid MMORPG to sink your teeth into. I particularly like the new pets, dungeons, and raids added to the game, and the community is immensely welcoming. So while you are in this one for the long haul, it is a sound addition to the limited VR MMORPG options.

Demeo
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Resolution Games | Resolution Games | Steam, Oculus, PlayStation, | May 6, 2021 |
Game Description
Demeo is a local dungeon crawler RPG, themed after the classic tabletop RPGs of yesterdecades, working across PC, VR, and PlayStation.
Requirements
Demeo is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Demeo
On Steam, Deep Rock Galactic has a “Very Positive” review score of 92% from 167,500 reviews, with the most recent being “Very Positive” at 85%.
Our Take on Demeo
Virtual pen-and-paper TTRPGs are increasing in popularity, and it seems many are on the brink of release. But until the onslaught of virtual TTRPGs, Demeo is the best and most intriguing. In fact, since adult- and fatherhood, scheduling D&D sessions went from hard to figuring out what is happening inside the black box of ChatGPT. Demeo, therefore, scratches my D&D itch to a tee. And while it can’t rival the intrigue, character arcs, and narratives of in-person D&D, Demeo excellently distills the dungeon crawling experience into a virtual board game enmeshed in an engrossing art style and fun times with your friends.

Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Resolution Games | Resolution Games | Steam, Oculus | Aug 29, 2019 |
Game Description
Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! is an asymmetrical tower defense and cross-platform party game with one player wearing a VR headset and the others using their smartphone.
Requirements
Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!
On Steam, Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! has a “Very Positive” review score of 93% from 128 reviews.
Our Take on Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!
On a different note, Acron delivers a concept that fits perfectly with post-dinner game nights. One player wearing a headset embodies a tree to defend its acorns against attacking squirrels played by the other players from their smartphones. Its low barrier to entry and short 15-20 minute play sessions are the biggest positives Acron has, making this game worth it. It is also great to get friends and family into VR gaming. My only gripe is I would love to see more gameplay variety, like smartphone players able to choose squirrel classes to plan different attack strategies. And the VR headset player being able to manipulate the level for defending. Despite this, you will fill many game nights with laughter and yells with Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!

Among Us VR
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Schell Games, Innersloth, Robot Teddy | Innersloth | Steam, Oculus PlayStation | Nov 10, 2022 |
Game Description
Among Us VR is the virtual reality port of the iconic traditional game. You work together with other players to repair your dilapidated spaceship by completing mini-puzzles while dodging and trying to figure out who the imposters are out to assassinate you one by one.
Requirements
Among Us VR is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Among Us VR
On Steam, Among Us VR has a “Mostly Positive” review score of 77% from 1,800 reviews, with the most recent being “Mixed” at 58%.
Our Take on Among Us VR
Among Us VR is solely reviewed based on playing it with friends and family and not randos. For one, because the lobby is filled with loud children, and two, because the voice moderation (mute) feature is too loose, muting said loud children so often that crucial coordination becomes impossible. Neither of these is an issue when playing with family and friends, but it still impacts the overall VR multiplayer game, a 7/10 it is. It also would be higher if it wasn’t for the numerous bugs plaguing the game. But at the core, Among Us VR is still the iconic traditional game in first-person VR and is head-over-heels fun times with your friends.

Gorilla Tag

Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Another Axiom | Another Axiom | Steam, Oculus | Jan 1, 2023 |
Game Description
As the name implies, Gorilla Tag sees you step into the feet of a gorilla amongst other gorillas playing the classic game of tag in virtual reality.
Requirements
Gorilla Tag is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Gorilla Tag
On Steam, Gorilla Tag has a “Very Positive” review score of 93% from 3,800 reviews, with the most recent being “Very Positive” at 94%.
Our Take on Gorilla Tag
While the description might seem simple, the execution is phenomenal. As players proclaim: “Reject humanity, become monke”. Because when all 10 potential monke players are pitted against each other, and the fast-paced tagging is let loose, the fun is undeniable. So while the graphics of its jungle levels are nothing to write home about, think PlayStation 1 fidelity, the main draw of Gorilla Tag is its gameplay. I recommend it for quick 10 minutes of fun.

Game Description
Blaston is a sparring-dueling game between two players (PvP) pitted against each other in a closed arena using guns, grenades, and in-betweens to deplete your opponent’s health before your own.
Requirements
Blaston is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Blaston
On Steam, Blaston has a “Very Positive” review score of 92% from 500 reviews.
Requirement
Blaston is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
Our Take on Blaston
Blaston is similar to Gorilla Tag for its simple concept. However, the execution is more complex, with numerous guns firing different-sized bullets, grenades cutting off an area, or lasers segmenting the opponents dodging space. When Blaston is at its best, the VR multiplayer game turns into a dance of offense and defense between two players: it is incredibly addicting. Blaston is as accessible as Gorilla Tag and is well worth its low price tag, and despite its slow-motion movements, expect to work up a sweat.

Arizona Sunshine
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Vertigo Games, Jaywalkers Interactive | Vertigo Games | Steam, Oculus, PlayStation, Viveport | Dec 6, 2016 |
Game Description
Arizona Sunshine is a zombie-survival corridor-to-arena shooter in first-person. It is a native VR single-player or cooperative game with up to three other players. The sequel is planned for a 2023 release.
How popular is Arizona Sunshine
On Steam, Arizona Sunshine has a “Very Positive” review score of 80% from 6,800 reviews, with the most recent being “Very Positive” at 90%.
Requirement
Arizona Sunshine is moderately accessible as a PC VR game, requiring a decent gaming computer, but can be played on the Oculus Quest 2 in standalone mode.
Our Take on Arizona Sunshine
As a cooperative multiplayer VR experience, Arizona Sunshine is becoming a classic (its dated release date is showing). So while the single-player experience is far better on the two Saints & Sinners games, the co-op and zombie horde mode in the scorched desert levels is excellent. Once the endless waves begin, it gets fabulously fun and intense. Yet, I would have loved to see RPG mechanics such as classes, progression systems, and more weapon variety.

Wands Alliances
[screenshot of gameplay]
Developer | Publisher | Platform | Release Date |
Cortopia Studios | Beyond Frames | Steam, Oculus | Oct 5, 2022 |
Game Description
Wands Alliance is an Unreal Tournament style, 3 versus 3, arena spell-slinging shooter with classes and spell loadouts.
How popular is Wands Alliances
On the Oculus store, Bait! Has 4.3/5 stars from 200 reviews.
Requirement
Wands Alliance is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
Our Take on Wands Alliances
A sleeper hit that is criminally underrated is the sequel to Wands: Wands Alliance. Set in the dank and gloomy streets of Victorian London, two teams of three choose a class between three types: damage dealer, tank, or healer/support while designing spell loadout between control, defensive, support, damage magic, and more. What makes Wands Alliance one of the best arena shooters is the vertical and layered level design that encourages you to tactically move in positions and dodge behind crates and walls. Play Wands Alliance as the player base needs to get bigger so the developers can add more spell variety, passives, skills, subclasses, and more into the game. When (if) this happens, it is a 5/5, but as the game is now, it is a 4/5.

Walkabout Mini Golf is a sports simulator set in colorful courses that mirror real-life mini golf courses. The developers also frequently add new content updates to Walkabout.
Requirement
Walkabout Mini Golf is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
How popular is Walkabout Mini Golf
On Steam, Walkabout Mini Golf has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” review score of 100% from 2,100 reviews, with the most recent being “Overwhelmingly Positive” at 98%.
Our Take on Walkabout Mini Golf
A personal favorite of mine is Walkabout Mini Golf. This VR sports game transports you to otherworldly worlds where the themed mini golf tracks in real life become the levels in Walkabout featuring 18 holes. Uniquely, Walkabout can deliver a distinctly tranquil experience alone or competitively fierce with up to four of your friends. The detail put into the courses and the sound design complementing them is stellar – my favorite being the Tourist Trap for how it instills calm at night.

Beat Saber is a native VR rhythm game where you slice neon blocks coming your way to the beat of a song. It can be played in multiplayer with up to five players and is based on score performance.
How popular is Beat Saber

Requirement
Beat Saber is accessible and can be played in standalone VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2.
Our Take on Beat Saber
The reason for this first honorable mention is that Beat Saber defined and popularized a whole subgenre within virtual reality gaming: rhythm games. Despite its dated release, Beat Saber is highly competent as a fun workout game with friends when you set your favorite songs as tunes for your neon box slicing. That is despite newer VR rhythm games released after which innovative the genre.
