ISIP’s AI Digital Twin Project: Pioneering Ethical & Beneficial Use of Emerging Technologies

The International Society of Service Innovation Professionals (ISIP) is spearheading an ambitious project to create AI digital twins, harnessing the potential of cutting-edge technologies while ensuring their responsible and ethical deployment. As Jim Spohrer, the driving force behind this initiative, explained during a recent online presentation: “a true AI digital twin will be more than just an avatar or talking head, a true AI digital twin will be in sync with that person so everything that person has read that day, everything the person may have written that day posted to social media, all of that will be used to keep the AI digital twin up to date.”

ISIP’s vision extends far beyond mere replication — it seeks to leverage AI digital twins to bridge gaps and enhance human capabilities.

“We at ISIP sometimes run panels and sometimes at the very last minute a speaker will have to cancel,” Spohrer began, “and if they know 24 hours in advance they might send a recording that we can play during the discussion, but they’re not there to answer questions — but what if we had a AI digital twin of that person who could give the talk for them who could answer questions for them. This is the motivating example that we gave to these students.”

At the heart of ISIP’s mission lies a profound commitment to responsible innovation. As Spohrer emphasized: “We firmly believe that every new technological capability has both good application and good use cases and unfortunately bad applications. Bad actors can use new capabilities to do bad things, for example, with AI digital twins we’ve heard about AI cloning without people’s permission or deep fakes of celebrities. These are bad actors using the technology for bad purposes but that shouldn’t stop us good actors from developing and using these capabilities for good purposes.”

By collaborating with student teams from esteemed universities, ISIP is not only advancing the frontiers of AI digital twin technology but also nurturing a generation of innovators equipped with the wisdom to harness its power for the greater good.
