Leading maritime companies in Japan, such as NYK Group, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and the Marubeni Corporation, have successfully completed the first stages of a project designed to assist in developing digital twins in shipbuilding, as reported by the Smart Maritime Network.
The initiative aims to create a data-sharing framework between ship owners and shipyards, such as Imabari Shipbuilding and the Japan Marine United Corporation. The project has pinpointed around 30 different use cases for data sharing in developing these twins.
Although the undertaking will not commence until 2025, the project aims to optimize shipbuilding efficiency and collaboration between shipowners and shipyards.
The project is just one initiative utilizing digital twins to improve the efficiency of the shipbuilding process. Recent research has shown that digital twins can result in significant competitive advantages for shipbuilders.
